Ready for mas again!!

I have a confession to make. It’s one I’ve made on this site before, but I’ll make it again for my more recent friends. I love carnival. I love soca. I love jumping in the hot sun. I love glittery costumes. But I’ve never been to Trinidad.

2008 was supposed to be the year. But you know how these things go – elections get in the way, people aren’t sure if they’ll have jobs or leave, hurricanes distract you, the girls you are going with are in too many countries to make the planning easy… so it is only know that we are actually trying to get it sorted. Which is of course late to be doing it. Tribe is sold out. Flights are getting fully booked.

The question is: Is it too late? Should we postpone our dream for another year? Or should we go for it?

I need help! People who have done Trini carnival, let me know! Will we be able to get Tribe costumes through Carnival Junction or somewhere? I’ve looked and it seems that loads of people are looking, and no one is selling. Or should we jump with another band?

2008 or 2009…

From what I have heard most of the costumes are sold out in Tribe… but I guess you could jump with another band. But Tribe seems to be the defacto mas band for people who live outside of Trinidad. You have to plan … or at least by your costume long in advance and then just arrange everything else around that after… its the one reason I haven’t gone as yet.

Trini carnival experience is worth it. Except that me nuh into di pretty costume at all, but I did do it one year, when it wasn’t quite so expensive.

But Trinidad is a great lime. I went back to Carnival in 2006 after not having been since 1991 and I had a blast. Thinking of popping across from the Spice Isle just for Panomara weekend and Brian Lara’s fete.

I think Island something band is also usually a good lime. There are two. is either Island Events or Island People. The one that Ken Gordon’s son and his gf Miss Khan (a former Miss TT) run.

KG, you don’t even need a costume to jump in Carnival. You could roll your own! If thats all it is, you and you sistren dem should not make that stop you. Still, 2009 it is! For me, anyway.

Never been to Trini Carnival 😦 All those pretty, sexy, scantily clad Trini women gyrating in the streets (sigh).

Girl please. You can still make it. There are other good bands .. some new ones that have costumes left. I am loving Evolution this year. Closer to carnival there are going to be more costume sales on Junction.. happens all the time. You can still make it.. just mightnt be the PERFECT carnival.

From one Soca Junkie to the next:
You won’t be able to get a costume unless you personally know someone in the Tribe organization and even then it’s not guaranteed.

Personally I’d try another band or postpone because just going on the road in TT without a costume is bare shite. You can do it, but at certain parts of the road where they put masqueraders inside the ropes, you’ll find yourself in Gen Popn and there’s a lot of pockpockets out there. I wouldn’t recommend it for women.

Your next option is to call up the mas camp and ask if you can pay for a wrist band without getting the costume. Sometimes they allow it.

Personally, I prefer Cropover to Trini carnival, but that’s just me (and a few other Jamaicans I know). We organized a trip to carnival one year with people in about 4 different countries. The key is to just book the costume and send out an email that you’re going regardless. Don’t wait, just start the action and everyone else will follow suit cos they won’t want to be the only one left out.

If no one else books, you’ll always be able to sell ur costume. Always.

Don’t give up! I went last year and decided in Januaray. I kept googling to find costumes and low and behold I found 2 in TRIBE in the same section. Don’t listed to what people say. If you are determined you will succeed!

I would definately say Trinidad Carnival is worth it. I am Trinidadian so I know it may sound biased but everyone I know that has experienced it for the first time have sworn to return and have. It gets in your blood. It’s 1mil times better than Jamaican Carnival. I have JA friends who would tell you that too. Tribe is the band to play in but like everyone says, it is hard to get into and they are reducing their size for 2009 because ppl complained they were too big. However the other options are a new band who is doing a media launch tonight, ‘Element’. Some members from Tribe have broken away and are forming this new band so there will be a good crowd. IP has beautiful costumes BUT their customer service sucks and their crowd is not really too nice. Harts is yet another young ppl band…average age is 24 and younger.
Websites you can go on are (check out pix from this year’s Carnival)

My favorite band is Tribe so I would obviously recommend them. Good luck and PS> Tribe is launching in July this year. Their theme is ‘Birds of a Feather’. IP’s theme is ‘heaven and Earth’…don’t know the rest. As bands are launching early, you might want to make plans early.

Hi. Just thought I’d leave you a comment since you seem fanatic about our Carnival in Trinidad.

Carnival Bands have already begun to launch for 2009. Tribe’s launch was on Saturday (July 26th 2008) and the theme is “Birds of a Feather”. Really gorgeous! But I’m afraid the band is quite exclusive. If you know someone, then you would have a better chance of getting a spot.

However, if you are looking for another popular band… try Island People (IP). Their launch should be coming up in August.

There are some other great bands as well, including some new ones that intend to showcase costumes for next year. Two new ones are “Spice” and “Kaotic”. Kaotic has already begun posting their costumes on their website: You could also keep updated on other probable bands that may interest you on a blog call trinidadcarnivaldiary authored by “Saucy” (I hope I stated it correctly… but the blog has some great info).

Another way of keeping on top of things is on facebook. Some of these bands have created groups and already posted some pics from the launches.

I hope I offered some help, especially since you have gotten advanced noticed, and could make a downpayment on your costumes from now so that you secure a spot for our Carnival in 2009.

    Good luck!
