Hellshire

On Sunday afternoon, we took the relatives from foreign to Hellshire for the afternoon. Hellshire is a beach just outside Kingston. It is a free beach and it gets very busy on the weekend with Kingstonians escaping.

I remember when I went to Hellshire as a kid. It was busy in those days – but nothing like as busy or commercialised as it is now. You can’t even park your car without lots of people telling you where to go and how much it will cost you.

But it is still a great place to go and people watch. Uptown Kingston will now go there to eat fish and lobster. But they will tend to stay in the fish huts. They will not go in the water. They go to Lime Cay, a boat ride from Kingston, instead nowadays. So swimming at Hellshire has now been left for those who can’t afford the boat ride to Lime Cay.

Hellshire always brings a smile to my face. There are usually families in the water. The kids all look so excited. Considering that Jamaica is a small island, so many Jamaicans do not know how to swim. Swimming lessons are expensive and there are no pool open to the public. So the children at Hellshire tend to be in the shallow waters, but they look so happy just to be in the water. And then there are the teenage girls, posing by the water in their bikinis. Pretending to ignore the boys. But in reality checking them out with quick glances. And then there are all the vendors trying to make a quick dollar. With their amazing radar that tells them that there is a foreigner in the vicinity.

So yes, there is hastle. But take it all with a pinch of salt. Keep smiling. Enjoy the atmosphere. And the fish is good. And the lobster is good. Mmmmm.

Lime Cay positively rocks though… same girls profiling, same liquor, fish, lobster, no people telling you where to park or trying to sell you stuff…

If you want to move low profile, go to Lime Cay during the week, tho not Thursday, which for some reason is more like a Saturday… Also, for a more private escapade, the back side of the island can be promising.

    Lime Cay forever!

Fried fish doesnt get any better than this! Hellshire is the best! I went to Port Royal for the first time on my most recent trip home (and I call myself Jamaican) and found that Gloria’s is great also… and cheaper too!
